Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) / Cognitive Reframing
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is the science of how the brain processes learning and experiences. This process affects how we communicate, behave, and even how we learn and see the world around us.
Because of this, cognitive reframing plays an important role in helping you reach your goals and achieve excellence.
What is NLP?
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a method that focuses on three main components that shape human experience:
- Neurology – How our bodies function.
- Language – How we communicate with others.
- Programming – The mental models we create about the world.
NLP looks at how these elements (mind, language, and behavior) interact with each other and affect the way we think, feel, and act.
What Does NLP Do?
NLP provides tools and techniques to help you develop personal excellence. It also encourages empowering beliefs about who we are, how communication works, and how change happens.
NLP, also called Cognitive Reframing, is about self-discovery. It helps you explore your identity and your life’s purpose.
Relaxation Response
This term, the Relaxation Response, was coined by Dr. Herbert Benson MD. It refers to a state of deep relaxation that helps balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Dr. Benson found that regular ‘elicitation of the relaxation response’, as he phrased it, is an effective way to treat a wide range of stress-related issues. And, this has been scientifically proven!
Stress
Stress is the body’s natural response to situations that require us to adjust our behavior. When faced with a threat—whether physical or emotional, real or imagined—a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus releases hormones.
These hormones trigger the sympathetic nervous system, which then releases epinephrine and norepinephrine—also known as adrenaline and noradrenaline. These are the “fight or flight” hormones.
When these hormones are released, your body enters a “state of arousal.” Your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, metabolism, and muscle tension all increase to prepare you for action. This is called the fight-or-flight response, a term first coined by Dr. Walter B. Cannon of Harvard Medical School in the early 1900s.
Benson, Herbert Dr M.D.
Dr. Herbert Benson is a pioneer in mind/body medicine. He brings spirituality and healing into medicine as well. Benson is an American medical doctor, cardiologist, and founder of the Mind/Body Medical Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is a professor of mind/body medicine at Harvard Medical School and director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital.
He defined the relaxation response. Also, he continues to lead teaching and research about the importance and ability to counteract the harmful effects of stress.
Dr. Benson has received many national and international awards. He has lectured widely about mind/body medicine. His expertise is often sought by national and international news media. You can see that he appears in numerous newspapers, magazines, and television programs each year.
Dr. Benson’s research extends from the laboratory to the clinic and to Asian field expeditions. His work serves as a bridge between medicine and religion, East and West, mind and body, and belief and science.
As a result, there have been more than four million copies of his books printed in many languages.
One of his books is the renowned Relaxation Revolution: The Science and Genetics of Mind Body Healing
